OpenJDK is in Ubuntu already and has had a browser plugin for a while. Plus, it's really easy to install. Best of all it's Free - not Sun proprietary. What’s all the fuss about? I linked it to the directory you specified as well as /usr/lib/firefox/plugins. When linked to the former, nothing happened. When linked to the latter, I get a blank box where there should be a dancing Duke (instead of a "missing plugin" box). Rats… no joy here.
