Can you imagine the amount of criticism Ubuntu would get if one of the beta releases deleted your mp3s? Microsoft accomplished that with the Windows 7 Beta, but somehow they don’t get much flak for it. I think that speaks to the honesty of the linux community.

Yeah…but….the wireless may work and most the active supposed links may get you somewhere.
Playin devil’s advocate here. All betas suxors one way or another. I also think Vista is not all bad. Also. for the same reason Linux really has no contention in end user consumerism…….welcome to good marketing against Vista.

“This highlights the importance of not using leaked builds with any applications or data that is critical and waiting for beta builds from official channels.”
Who would have guessed that. Seriously though, if it’s a leaked build that shouldn’t be out there in the first place, it might be considered a bit hypocritical to blame the software for doing something unexpected. Correct me if I’m wrong, I didn’t look into this, it’s just how I understand “leaked”.

How does this speak to the honesty of the Linux community? I don’t get it. What am I missing? I believe this happened in a leaked interim build of Windows 7, not the beta.
Come on! Let’s be fair. Regressions happen ALL THE TIME in Linux. The difference is, your distro will blame the individual component or library responsible for the problem. When you complain that your distro should have tested X component/library before including it, your distro would have very coldly told you to use an LTS build/Stable release, etc. Of course, this only happens after you are chastised publicly for using pre-alpha software in a real-world environment.

It’s a beta. If you* didn’t backed up your files, you’re wrong. Call me when that’s happening on production software.
* Hypothetical you, not “Steven Harms” you…

I was saying it speaks to the honesty of the Linux community because whenever even the most minor aspect isn’t exactly what someone is expecting, there is a nasty email / bug report / bug post on it.
However on neowin.net they said the mp3 bug was still in the beta release (not the leaked release), and that you should update immediately after installing.

First of all. It did not delete the MP3 files it trimmed a second or two off of them. Only if they were previously edited in WMP or another program. Secondly it is a Public Beta. I know you have had to have problems with Beta Distros in the past that negatively affected you.
