We now have flash and java in 64-bit browsers. What are you waiting for?

To install the 64-bit java-plugin:
- Download the plugin
- cd /opt
- sudo sh location_of_download.bin
- cd /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
- sudo ln -s /opt/jre1.6.0_12/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so
- Restart Firefox
Also I used Sun Java JRE, which is installed like this:
- sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre
- sudo update-alternatives –config java
- Pick the one with sun java

Thanks very much for these instructions.
When I attempt your Sun Java JRE instructions, I get the error message:
update-alternatives: unknown argument `–config’

WINE64 also.
With K/Ubuntu Jaunty, I intend to go 64 bit.
Next up: The IPv6 transition.

Thanks. Looks like -config should be –config, two dashes instead of one.

Rats… no joy here.
I linked it to the directory you specified as well as /usr/lib/firefox/plugins. When linked to the former, nothing happened. When linked to the latter, I get a blank box where there should be a dancing Duke (instead of a “missing plugin” box).

For it to come out of alpha!
Well, unfortunately I’m on 64bit already so any improvement is welcome. Too many places don’t provide 64bit .debs though.

What’s all the fuss about? OpenJDK is in Ubuntu already and has had a browser plugin for a while. Plus, it’s really easy to install. Best of all it’s Free – not Sun proprietary.

Craig, there wasn’t a 64 bits browser plugin, that is BIG news and they are going to close a nearly 6 years old bug http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4802695
