I use 3 monitors, with the middle monitor having 6 workspaces:
1. Firefox + Gnome Terminal
2. Terminator + Gnome Terminal (all monitoring servers)
3. VMWare Workstation 6.5 (Change management software is windows only)
4. Gwibber + Xchat
5. Aqua Data Studio + Gnome Terminal (Generally Python programming)
6. Gnome Terminal + Galeon (Web Development (django or symfony))

I use two workspaces, down from four (in two rows). The simple reason being that since there is no window matching and hence, sorting, it becomes counter-productive to arrange my windows manually, or search for them in the “pile” of open windows (devilspie is too much work to configure).
I have my window list to display windows from all work spaces to ease the process of finding my windows.
This means that I leave windows wherever they open, and move those that get in my way to the next workspace in no particular order.
I only have a laptop, and I use two monitors whenever I’m at home.

Yup I agree, I don’t strive to order my windows, but I do have the same work process that generally results in the same thing every day so it tends to end up that way
