Growing FOSS communities through EULA's

In order to install ‘openSUSE’ (product), you must agree to terms of the following license agreement:

openSUSE 11.1
Novell Pre-Release Software License Agreement
PLEASE READ THIS AGREEMENT CAREFULLY. BY INSTALLING OR OTHERWISE USING THE SOFTWARE (INCLUDING ITS COMPONENTS), YOU AGREE TO THE TERMS OF THIS AGREEMENT. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE WITH THESE TERMS, DO NOT DOWNLOAD, INSTALL OR USE THE SOFTWARE AND, IF APPLICABLE, RETURN THE ENTIRE UNUSED PACKAGE TO THE RESELLER WITH YOUR RECEIPT FOR A REFUND. THE SOFTWARE MAY NOT BE SOLD, TRANSFERRED, OR FURTHER DISTRIBUTED WITHOUT PRIOR WRITTEN AUTHORIZATION FROM NOVELL.

Mr. Wafaa clears up the situation:
“Yawn! This EULA is used with *every* non-final release. The main purpose is to protect openSUSE and Novell from magazines and other distributors from bundling a non-GM release as the final product. Hence the “interesting point”

As the release number has changed, it effectively becomes a new release hence requiring confirmation of the EULA. Would you rather no EULA, and have it distributed by someone as the real deal and wonder why people moan that openSUSE is an unstable worthless distro?”

Since when did distributing your software, generating buzz etc become bad? At what point did the team go ‘Well people could distribute this outside of Novell, and that would be horrible marketing. If we throw a EULA in there people will love that and help!’.

I mean honestly, the openSUSE team from what I have observed needs a community, and developers to help. How does this make anyone want to help? How does it foster the environment needed?

Old dog, new trick

I commonly have 4-6 ssh sessions open at once, and when I lose my VPN connection, they just sit there until their timeout hits. I was looking for a way to stop the session, and CTRL-C, CTRL-D, CTRL-Z and everything inbetween didn’t work.

I found salvation in: ‘~.’

That will exit your session no problem.

Was looking at reddit.com and found a blog post about ld.so.nohwcap. Is this something everyone has been doing and I just have been out of the loop?

Open Source RadeonHD driver 1.2.2 released

From Phoronix: “The last release of the xf86-video-radeonhd driver was version 1.2.1 and that happened back in April. Since then we have seen a plethora of new work go into this open-source ATI driver for the Radeon R500 series and later. We’ve seen the driver add support for AMD’s 780G Chipset and most notably it has adopted AtomBIOS to be used on the Radeon HD 4800 series and newer. There have also been numerous other improvements to this driver that currently competes with the xf86-video-ati driver. With much of this work now being settled, the Novell development team has released the RadeonHD 1.2.2 driver. In addition, they pushed out the RadeonHD 1.2.3 driver just moments later, which introduces their Command Submission infrastructure.”

Bug report

Haven’t got any attention on this, so I figured I would throw it to the blogosphere and see what happens. I have reproduced this on several different machines. I assume everyone’s automatic Xorg config is working well, so nobody has tried to look at their log files?

Basically, ‘cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log’ or ‘less /var/log/Xorg.0.log’ show me the log, in it’s entirety. ‘more /var/log/Xorg.0.log’ only shows me the very top of it. This happens using the Ubuntu Beta Live CD prior to installation or any system modification.

Yes, I reported it.
