Does anyone have novell’s linux client running under Ubuntu? I would think that since Novell wants to be a major player, this would be something they can clue me in on.

Yeah, we packaged it.

Look there for the source if you want to build it. Having said that, I suggest using the imap gateway if your server has it avaliable. Also if your using the messenger stuff I recommend pidgin.

Client for what?
For Groupwise messenger, Gaim supports it. We the Groupwise groupware, Evolution has a connector. Both Free Software.
These and what is mentionned above.
Saying “Novel client” is like say “Microsoft client”: too vague to bring a useful answer.

Actually I already use both gaim and evolution, but I have some users saying they need to run SLED for the linux client which runs their login scripts and mounts their file shares.
After searching the forums, and downloading novell-linux-client from novell.com, I was not able to get it working without much hassle, and was looking for an easier solution.

From the ubuntuforums: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=459717&highlight=novel+client
A rebuild is required if your network interface is not ‘eth0′. A patch is deserved.

I’m sure that Steven is interested in the *genuine* “Novell Client for Linux”
http://www.novell.com/products/openenterpriseserver/linuxclient.html
I recently read about some peoples failed attempts to use alien to convert the rpm packages for use with Ubuntu on the ubuntuforums .. If only someone at Novell could spend a couple of days on packaging this for Ubuntu many of their enterprise customers would be very thankful.

Man, they don’t even make one for SuSE (https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=262319). They’ll get to it. Eventually.

As previously said, converting Novell RPMs of their “Novell Client for Linux” using alien does not do the trick.
The “Novel Client” (not a typo!) (http://novelclient.sourceforge.net/) is a somewhat old project that boils down to an interface to ncpfs and some script intelligence. It works, after fiddling with SUID bits. The biggest drawback of ncpfs is that it doesn’t manage Novell’s files permissions. And it mounts the entire volume.
I’m still trying to get the programs from Novell to run under Ubuntu, dunno if I’ll go somewhere.

I’ve never been able to get the client to work. I always end up using the ncpfs package.
